Taphonomy is the term that covers the changes that the body undergoes after death. These are natural processes, and include the effects of animal activity, the environment and the burial substance. Understanding the effects of these varied taphonomic processes can help us to understand such things as the condition of the body before deposition and the time since death. Unfortunately, understanding the effect of such taphonomic processes is difficult due to the highly inter-linked and varied nature of them.
